Carved pumpkins which are lit from within and called Jack o Lanterns are one of the most popular symbols of Halloween. The practice of using pumpkins came to the USA from Europe where it was believed that the head of a vegetable like the turnip was useful in warding off the evil spirits that plague the earth on this day.
