Verdant gardens and parks feature in practically every city of the world. However some are more famous because of the gorgeous flower displays that they host. These fragrant flower displays take the form of annual flower shows are visited by millions of flower loving and gardening enthusiasts from all over the world. The Philadelphia Flower Show- late February to early March
The historic city of Philadelphia which is located on the East Coast of the USA has been associated with flowers and horticultural for ages ever since the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society was founded here in 1827 and the first Philadelphia Flower Show was held in 1829. This first flower show however was not held in a city garden but indoors in a building called Masonic Hall on Chestnut Street. The first Philadelphia flower show showcased exotic and native plants like magnolias, peonies from China, an India rubber tree, the Coffee Tree of Arabia, and sugar cane from the West Indies as it captured the imagination of the people and the Philadelphia Flower Show then went on to be annual extravaganza which is held every year at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where it encompasses 33 indoor acres and proudly wears the crown of the largest flower show in the world as it attracts 250,000 people annually.

Ellerslie Flower Show- early March, Christchurch, New Zealand
Christchurch, the Garden City of the World which has one eighth of its area devoted to public parks, reserves and recreation grounds hosts a five day annual gardening and lifestyle extravaganza called the Ellerslie International Flower Show every year in the month of March at its huge 459 acre Hagley Park which is located in the heart of the city. This event showcases the horticultural, floral, landscape design and construction businesses of New Zealand in form of show gardens and floral marquees that display innovative garden design trends and new plants. Over the years green issues like ‘sustainability which consists of re-use and recycling and sensitivity to the environment have also featured prominently at this grand flower and garden celebration.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show- May, Chelsea, London, England
The Chelsea Flower Show which is held on the grounds of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea, London is perhaps the worlds most famous and well-known flower show which attracts visitors from all around the globe and much media attention. This flower show is also held over five days and features show gardens which are created by leading international landscape architects and garden designers who apply to participate in the Chelsea Flower Show. The show also features Urban gardens which are created to suit smaller urban landscapes, a Great Pavilion which features gorgeous flower displays created by exhibitors from around the globe and a floral design marquee. Gardening products and innovations also find a place at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

VanDusen Flower and Garden Show, June, Vancouver, Canada
The Van Dusen Botanical Gardens which are a major tourist attraction in the Canadian city of Vancouver host an annual flower and garden show in June every year. This show usually features more than 250 exhibitors who create several outdoor theme gardens which extend over 10 acres and feature themes like ‘Passion’, ‘Eden’, ‘a Fern Grotto’ a Victorian Conservatory etc. This flower show is not only limited to flowers but also show cases the talents of many leading Vancouver Chefs in its food and drink pavilion.

Australia Floriade, - September to October, Canberra, Australia
Australia Floriade is Australia’s biggest flower festival which is held at the capital city, Canberra’s Commonwealth Park that is located on the shore of Lake Burley-Griffin. This show features more than a million blooms which are arranged in fantastic themed gardens. This year, the Australia Floriade be held from 12th September to 11th October and will feature innovative garden displays, informative workshops and much regional food and wine

Hate to disappoint, but VanDusen no longer produces a Flower & Garden Show. We have not done so for the past five years. You may wish to remove the listing from your post.

The Philadelphia flower show is huge. I live only 120 miles from Philly and have visited the show several times. If you enjoy flowers, you’ll like this show.

I didn’t realise that the RHS Flower Show had grabbed such international acclaim! Well, I guess we are a nation of gardners! So our best has to be world leading right? I never thought of us as holding the leadership position in gardening - but now I think about it. It makes sense!

The Philly show is great - I try to go every year. If you’ve never gone and are in the area - it is worth checking out.
