To further the interests and popularize Latin American art, Buenos Aires based ArteBA Fundacion each year holds a huge Contemporary Art Fair called ArteBA. This year this grand showcase of Latin American art is to be held from Friday, 22nd May to Tuesday, 26th May at La Rural Exhibition Center which is located in the barrio( district) of Palermo which is located on the north east side of this sprawling port city located on the west bank of the Río de la Plata.
Interesting facts about arteBA
This year, arteBA is celebrating its 18th anniversary and it promises to be as interesting as ever. This contemporary art fair typically attracts over 120,000 local and international artists, collectors and buyers as it provides them with an ideal platform for easy interaction. The art which is displayed at the fair is put together by a selection committee who chooses the works from a wide range of galleries that are located in Argentina and other countries so that buyers and collectors who are always on the lookout for new and happening artists can enjoy and pursue the widest possible selection.
The fair also enables members of the general public to get acquainted with many different artists from the region and overseas. If you would like to know about the various participants at this years’ arteBA you can visit the official arteBA website which has a listing of all the exhibitors participating in arteBA 2009.
The fair which opens with an exclusive party on the evening of 21st of May is held at the La Rural Blue and Green Pavilions. Admission for the general public opens at 1pm on the 22nd of May. La Rural is easily accessible by the various modes of public transport that serve the city of Buenos Aires.
Apart from these artworks, the fair will also feature a series of lectures and discussions on the various challenges that face the world of contemporary art today. Some of the topics to be touched at these conferences are Museums: the new challenges, Collectors’ public agendas, New curators’ projects etc. These topics will be debated by directors of different museums, collectors, curators and architects at the auditorium of La Rural at various times during the fair.
arteBA is an art fair that enjoys much corporate sponsorship from various global corporations like the leading Brazilian energy company, Petrobras that sponsors the ArteBA- Petrobras Prize for Visual Arts each year. This company has been sponsoring exhibits at the ArteBA for the past six years. The company awards each selected artist an amount of $10,000 which is then used for realization and exhibition during the arteBA. This year eight artists have been selected as recipients of this prize.
Another prominent participant at arteBA is Chandon Winery which is based in Argentina’s famous wine producing region of Mendoza. Chandon will be sponsoring twenty stands at this years’ arteBA fair which will be located in a section christened ‘the Chandon Young Quarter’. The artists who will exhibit at the Chandon Young Quarter are to be selected by a special selection committee composed of directors of local and international art galleries.
Chandon will also purchase the first work to be sold at this years’ arteBA through a closed door auction. This year the artwork which will be honored with the Chandon award will be a photograph which will be added to the company’s contemporary art collection that is to be displayed at its headquarters in Mendoza. Swiss insurance company Zurich, German auto manufacturer Mercedes Benz and US banking and financial services giant, America Express are other major patrons of arteBA who will be making their presence felt this year as well.
Since arteBA 2009 promises to be an exciting, edgy, ground breaking event, you might want to consider taking advantage of the many available air fare deals to combine a trip to the vivacious, historical city of Buenos Aires with a visit to the arteBA 2009. However, if you have already made up your mind to do so, you might also want to check out the attractive rates being offered by several highly rated, centrally located Buenos Aires hotels for the event, like the Park Elegance Unique Hotels, Dolmen Hotel and Dazzler Libertad.
